A note from Fr. Z: Pray for the souls of priests

Posted by verbumpatris on October 30, 2009

Pray for the souls of priests.

First, remember that you can gain indulgences on All Souls and the days following.

Second, 5 November is a first Thursday.  You can gain a plenary indulgence during this year for Priests.

Third, would it not be a good idea in this Year for Priests, during the week after All Souls, for this 1st Thursday, to pray in a special way for the souls of deceased priests?

May I recommend that you bring this up with your parish priests, who might make pulpit announcements this Sunday?

If you are a blogger, would you post something on this?

Would you recommend this to your prayer groups, friends and family?

Talks begin between Holy See and SSPX

Posted by verbumpatris on October 26, 2009

COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE PONTIFICAL COMMISSION “ECCLESIA DEI”

On Monday 26 October 2009 in the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio, headquarters of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei”, the study commission made up of experts from “Ecclesia Dei” and from the Society of St. Pius X held its first meeting, with the aim of examining the doctrinal differences still outstanding between the Society and the Apostolic See.

In a cordial, respectful and constructive climate, the main doctrinal questions were identified. These will be studied in the course of discussions to be held over coming months, probably twice a month. In particular, the questions due to be examined concern the concept of Tradition, the Missal of Paul VI, the interpretation of Vatican Council II in continuity with Catholic doctrinal Tradition, the themes of the unity of the Church and the Catholic principles of ecumenism, the relationship between Christianity and non-Christian religions, and religious freedom. The meeting also served to specify the method and organisation of the work.

Say a wee prayer that the talks go well, pray for unity in the Church even if you don’t entirely agree with the SSPX.

Archbishop Burke celebrates Latin Mass in St Peter’s

Posted by verbumpatris on October 23, 2009

Below are some exerpts from the Archbishops Homily and pictures from the Mass:

PontifiaklamtPetersdom15

PontifiaklamtPetersdom17

“In the Holy Mass, the Son renews his sacrifice on Calvary, the sacrifice through which he will accomplish the perfect healing of our souls. Every gesture of the Mass signifies our encounter with Christ, who comes to heal us. In the sacrifice of the Mass, earth and heaven meet.

“As the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council taught, the Holy Mass is the source and summit of our faith. The Popes throughout the ages all took great care that the celebration of the Eucharist be carried out correctly and with great reverence.

“And our current Pope, Benedict XVI, in his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, has taught clearly that there is no contradiction between the two forms of the Mass in the Latin rite, the old Mass according to missal of St. Pius V, and the new Mass of Pope Paul VI. There is progress, but no rupture with the past.”

“And Pope Benedict has made very clear that the old rite, now called the extraordinary form of the Latin rite, cannot be rejected or regarded as dangerous in any way,” … “The double rite is a gift to the Church. The two forms will mutually enrich each other.

“For example, with regard to the old rite, new saints’ feast days, and new prayers, can be added. And, the sense of the sacred which so permeates the old Mass can exert a positive influence on the new form of the Latin rite.”

Our Condolences to Mgr Gänswein

Posted by verbumpatris on October 22, 2009

Gertrud Gänswein, the 78 year old mother of Pope Benedict’s personal secretary, Msgr. Georg Gänswein died on Wednesday at her home in Freiburg, Germany, the Vatican announced today.

The Vatican did not explain the causes of Mrs. Gänswein’s death, but L’Osservatore Romano lamented the “unexpected” passing.

In August, Mrs. Gänswein joyfully participated in celebrating the 25th anniversary of her son’s priestly ordination, and was received in an audience by Pope Benedict XVI.

Today L’Osservatore Romano published condolences from several Vatican dicasteries, including the Press Office, the Swiss Guard and the community of Vatican workers.
